Call for Papers : The Global Politics of Food : Social Issues, Food Security, and Health.


A thematic session focussed on the relationship between food security and the social determinants of health will be held by the Research Committee on the Sociology of Agriculture and Food (RC-40) during the World Congress of Sociology in Durban, South Africa, July 23-29, 2006. This session is interested in submissions related to all aspects of the global politics of food in relation to human health, particularly with respect to factors that influence access to quality food and choices about consumption. Papers will be chosen from a variety of fields such as political economy, economics, sociology, nutrition, public health, public policy, and political science.


Suggested topics include but are not limited to the following:

* the role of agri-business and the food industry on food choices and health;

* the social determinants of food consumption and diet;

* responsibilities of state social policy versus the market in promoting food security and public health;

* relationships between agri-business, food retail, and food security;

* the rise of supermarkets in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and their relationship to food and nutrition security;

* poverty and food choices in the global economy;

* international trade and the flow of food between North and South­improving food security or promoting dietary decline?;

* the impact of food marketing and advertising on healthy food choices;

* the relationship between market concentration in the food system and food and nutrition security.

Submissions describing the situation in different regions within a global context are particularly encouraged.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is August 31, 2005.


All successful presenters will be informed by September 30, 2005. Presenters will be responsible for all travel and subsistence costs associated with ISA2006, unless a travel award is obtained from the ISA.
